In computer science, operating system or in the English language operating system (OS) is a software system that serves gives an overview of the control and management of hardware and various basic operating system used by software applications, such as data processing programs and browsers web.

Basically, the operating system software is contained on the first layer are stored in computer memory when the computer starts up. Meanwhile, other software is used after the operating system is ready for use and the operating system will perform the core services for the software.

Core services, such as access to the disk, memory management, task scheduling, and user interface. Thus, the applications no longer need to perform common tasks because it can be served and performed by the operating system. Parts that perform the core duties and the general is called an operating system kernel.

If the computer system is divided into several layers, the operating system is the liaison between the hardware layer with a layer of software. If seen further, the operating system do all the important tasks in the computer and ensure that different applications can be operated simultaneously with the smooth.

Operating system software ensures others can use the memory, perform input and output to other equipment, and have access to the file system. If several applications to operate simultaneously, set the operating system portion of the right time so that as much as possible all the running processes get enough time to use the processor (CPU) and do not interfere with each other.

The operating system allows only one application that operates at a time, such as the DOS operating system.
